How NYC Birth Village came to be!

After many years as birth doulas, we decided to take the expertise gathered from having supported hundreds of families to start a vibrant doula agency focused on providing expert care to expecting parents throughout NYC. We wanted to create a place where families could receive continuity of care and meet their educational and support needs through birth and postpartum.  We also wanted families to be guided by doulas that share in our philosophy of offering individualized, evidence based care given with great warmth and compassion.  And so NYC Birth Village doula agency was born.

For birth support, our agency is one of a kind in that we focus on offering that service through doula partnerships where exceptional, vetted doulas combine their expertise and availability to best support their families together. We also offer postpartum support as well as classes ranging from childbirth education to breastfeeding support facilitated by our certified doulas. But we don’t stop there. Our agency stands committed to our doulas’ professional development by offering continued education, guidance, and ongoing mentorship from the moment they join our team to ensure our families receive the best quality of care.

NARCHI, Co-founder

I am a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, breastfeeding counselor, and mother of three children and live on the UWS.  I grew up in Romania during communism, a revolution, and the wild post-communism times. In spite of the difficult times, I value immensely the education that I received in school and in life. In 1999, right after completing my degree in Sociology, my life took a radical turn when I won the lottery – the visa lottery to America! With little resources and lots of hope and faith, I started my journey as an immigrant that still continues to this day.

My passion for the birth field began through my own births – a cesarean and 2 VBACs. After the birth of my last child in 2010, I quit the corporate world and started my education and work in the birth field. I was incredibly lucky to find my future doula partner, Karla, right off the bat! Together we supported hundreds of families through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journeys. Through my personal and professional experience I learned intimately about the importance of compassionate support during this powerful transition to becoming a parent of a new human being.

As co-founder of NYC Birth Village and doula mentor I aim to share from my doula knowledge and life experience, instill confidence, and teach skills, so that people who chose this special work can build sustainable and successful practices. I hope to continue to build the NYC Birth Village, one doula and client at a time.

KARLA, Co-founder

I’m a New York City based certified birth doula, postpartum doula, and certified breastfeeding counselor. Previously, I graduated from Tulane University with degrees in Psychology and Political Science.  I worked for 9 years as a political campaign director coaching activists and organizers to find the courage and will to run challenging environmental, human rights, and electoral campaigns.  I thrived working in an intense environment guiding a team towards a goal.

Around this time, my sister asked me to be her doula for her first and second birth.  I actually found the work to be quite similar.  Intense, raw but so beautifully intimate.  Being with her during that demanding and awe-inspiring moments left me with a deep respect for women, our bodies, and the miracles the universe can provide us with after hard work.  Her beautiful babies are what brought me to New York City and those experiences are the reason I got certified as a doula.  Today I support families with natural and medicated births in NYC hospitals, birthing centers and homes.  After having been a birth doula for hundreds of families, I have witnessed the impact that a smooth transition into parenthood and a successful breastfeeding relationship can have on a family. I feel so incredibly grateful that my time with families can leave such a positive lasting impression that I hope will be with them for many years to come.

 I speak English and Spanish.
