Lis and Nan

Nan

Nan (she/her) is a DONA International trained Birth and Postpartum Doula. She believes her purpose in life is to heal and mend. Her doula support is built on the tenets of compassion, advocacy, and equity. Nan believes that all birthing people have the right to birth in whatever way they see fit. With experience supporting friends and loves ones navigate the trauma of sexual violence, and from personal first hand experience, Nan understands how corrosive that trauma is the connection between mind, body, and spirit.

By working as a doula and yoga instructor, and by tailoring her work to the needs of survivors, Nan works to ensure her clients feel safe and trusting at such a vulnerable and beautiful moment of their lives. Nan’s postpartum support focuses on nourishing the body and mind so that clients may better focus their energies on healing and getting to know the new little human in their life. Nan has been greatly influenced by the postpartum traditions of Cuarentena and Zuo Yue Zi, as studies have shown lower rates of postpartum mood disorders in communities that follow these or similar practices.

Nan lives in Harlem with her piles of books and tiny herb garden.

Lis

Lis (they/them) is a non-binary DONA trained birth doula that centers their work around empathy, advocacy, and equity. Lis acts as a helpful guide through your birth journey, providing exercises to practice self-advocacy and self-affirmation. Through healthy communication and trust-building, Lis aims to create an environment conducive for personal growth and healing.

Lis believes that the intersection of their queer, trans, and latinx identities informs their work in birth support. They strive to uplift women while simultaneously advocating for the visibility of trans and gender-nonconforming individuals in birthing spaces. They also believe that a doula’s work is integral to reducing maternal health disparities in Black and Brown birthing individuals, specifically in New York City. It’s their goal to make sure their clients feel safe, heard, understood, supported, and empowered, leaving them with the most positive and rewarding birthing experience possible. Lis lives in Brooklyn with their roommate and two cats. In their free time, they enjoy reading novels, playing the bass, knitting, and painting.
