The Difference Between Overnight Doulas and Baby Nurses
Unlike baby nurses who focus solely on infant care, postpartum doulas support the whole family helping you build confidence in your parenting while ensuring everyone gets rest.
Doulas are self-sufficient and low-maintenane. They just need a flat surface to rest when the baby sleeps.
Their care is evidence-based, personalized, and includes lactation support, newborn care, and guidance through your physical and emotional recovery.
Rather than taking over, doulas work collaboratively with parents to develop a postpartum plan that fits your unique needs.
Postpartum doulas receive education on the physical and emotional recovery process after birth, infant feeding (breast, bottle, formula), lactation process, infant care, infant development in the early months, parenting philosophies, perinatal mood disorders, standards of postpartum support practice, and more!
The Details
If your budget allows, we recommend booking 6–8 weeks of overnight support to help you through major early milestones—like hormonal shifts, growth spurts, partner transitions to work so you can get to a place with longer baby sleep stretches.
Visits are typically 10 hours, with a 30-hour minimum. Doulas often rest in a separate space with the baby to maximize your sleep though baby can also rest with you. If you’re nursing, they’ll assist with feeds, or bottle feed as needed.
Rates range from $40–$80/hr, depending on experience and credentials. Our doulas aren’t sleep trainers and do not stay fully awake all night—if baby sleeps, they rest too.
To remain available for births, they schedule week to week rather than committing to fixed nights far in advance.
All our postpartum doulas have passed background checks and are current on Tdap vaccinations.
