The Difference Between Overnight Doulas and Baby Nurses

  • Whole-family support: Overnight doulas care for both baby and parents, offering guidance, reassurance, and hands-on help - while baby nurses typically focus primarily on the baby.

  • Gentle, responsive approach: Doulas follow your baby’s cues and support your parenting style, whereas baby nurses may be more schedule-focused.

  • Feeding guidance: Whether you’re breastfeeding, pumping, or bottle feeding, doulas provide non-judgmental support tailored to your goals.

  • Emotional support: Doulas are there to nurture not just your baby, but your confidence - offering calm, steady support during the early weeks.

  • Thoughtful training: Doulas are trained in evidence-based, family-centered care.

The Details

  • If your budget allows, we recommend booking 6–8 weeks of overnight support to help you through major early milestones—like hormonal shifts, growth spurts, partner transitions to work so you can get to a place with longer baby sleep stretches.

  • Visits are typically 10 hours, with a 20-hour minimum. Doulas often rest in a separate space with the baby to maximize your sleep though baby can also rest with you. If you’re nursing, they’ll assist with feeds, or bottle feed as needed.

  • We also suggest a 2-hour prenatal session to have the doula tour your space, give advice on baby items and create a personalized postpartum plan with you.

  • Rates range from $45–$85/hr (extra for twins), depending on experience and credentials. Our doulas aren’t sleep trainers and do not stay fully awake all night—if baby sleeps, they rest too.

  • To remain available for births, they schedule week to week rather than committing to fixed nights far in advance.

  • All our postpartum doulas have passed background checks and are current on Tdap vaccinations.
